The Dangers Of Having Mice On Your Jerome Property
April 20, 2021
So you have a few mice in your Jerome house. What’s the big deal? Mice are cute, right? (Did you know that some people actually pay money to have mice as pets so they can watch them run on little wheels and sleep in cuddly piles with noses and feet sticking out everywhere? They are adorable!) What isn’t so adorable is when wild mice are loose inside your attic and wall voids. Today we are talking about home-invading wild mice, the destruction and health hazards they bring, and what can be done to totally get rid of an infestation.
Home-Invading Mice In Jerome
Mice are tiny creatures with rounded ears, pointy noses, and long thin tails. Their bodies are covered in a light layer of velvety fur that ranges in color from light gray to black, and their underbellies are lighter than the rest of them. Mice “hands” and “feet” appear hairless and can look almost like very tiny human hands. But although these creatures are tiny, they can cause a lot of problems if one or more finds their way into your home.
Property Destruction Caused By Mice
Like all rodents, mice have incisors (front teeth) that never stop growing. Imagine if you had teeth that never stopped growing! You would have to file them down to keep them from poking you in the chest or growing up over your head. Mice file their teeth by chewing on things. They will chew on everything from wood and sheetrock to treasured items in your attic and electrical wires inside your walls. This last thing can cause house fires. Scary stuff.
Mice will chew holes in your exterior to get into your home and then continue chewing through walls and other areas to get from place to place once they are inside. Holes in your outer walls can allow rainwater or moisture to get in, allowing mold, mildew, and wood rot to take root.
In addition to chewing on everything and making holes, mice also soil areas and items with their urine and feces. If there are enough mice, a bad smell will develop. And mice also damage or destroy insulation, fabric items, furniture, and other things by chewing off pieces of material to use for their nests.
Health Hazards Brought By Mice
Wild mice are dirty creatures. They love to get into garbage cans and sewers, or run around on toilet rims, and then crawl on kitchen counters and other sensitive locations, bringing bacteria everywhere they go. Some of the diseases mice are known to carry are tularemia, salmonellosis, rat-bite fever, plague, and leptospirosis.
Like this isn’t bad enough, mice also carry parasites (mites, lice, fleas, and ticks) that can spread other diseases, scary diseases such as Lyme disease which can be carried and transmitted to humans by certain ticks. If you have mice in your home, you could soon be faced with a flea infestation even if you don’t have any pets.
