How To Protect Yourself From Boise Ticks

September 30, 2021

There are two types of dangers in this world: one’s we can perceive, and one’s just out of sight. One danger that stands just out of view is the harm that can come from a tick bite. These yard pests carry and spread dangerous diseases. What makes things worse is that every bite puts you at risk of contracting a life-changing illness. For this reason, it is essential that you avoid ticks and their bites as much as possible. Here are some ways to protect yourself from these pests in the Boise area.

Wear Tick Repellent

Tick repellent is a great way to keep ticks off your body and clothing while traveling outdoors. The CDC recommends using products containing 0.5% permethrin to treat boots, camping gear, and outdoor clothing before going camping or walking out in nature. If you don’t like chemical-based repellents, several environmentally friendly options are less effective but better than nothing.

Tuck Your Pant Legs Into Your Socks

Ticks will not drop onto you from above. These pests usually transfer from tall grass or dense foliage onto feet and legs. To prevent ticks from crawling up your pants, wear long pants and tuck your pant legs into your socks. This may look silly, but it will help tremendously.

Use Duct Tape

This may seem silly, but wrapping duct tape around your thigh with the sticky side facing out is an excellent way to stop ticks. If these pests try to scale you and get onto your skin under your shirt, they will get stuck on the adhesive, where you can dispose of them later.

Avoid Walking Through Dense Foliage & Tall Grass

You are most likely to encounter a tick while walking through tall grass or thick undergrowth. If possible, avoid these areas while you are outside. If you cannot avoid walking through these areas, take every other precaution you can before doing so.

What To Do If A Tick Bites You

Not all ticks carry disease; however, some do. If a tick bites you in our area, remove it with a pair of fine-tipped tweezers. Use the tweezers to grip the tick as close to where it has buried its head into your skin. Once you have a good hold, pull directly away from your skin with firm pressure. Do not jerk or twist. After the tick is out, store it inside of a plastic bag inside of your freezer.

If you develop Lyme disease symptoms, bring stored ticks to your doctors so they can study them and learn what strain you are sick with. This will make things a lot easier for your doctors and allow them to find you the treatment you need.
